Mandrel bending

Long-standing mastery with advanced mandrel technology

Mandrel bending is a pipe and tube forming process that uses a steel plug, also known as a mandrel, inside the pipe while a rotating steel die guides the material around a precise radius. The internal support dramatically reduces flattening of the pipe’s cross-section, so bends emerge smooth, accurate, with minimal deformation.

As innovators in tube and pipe bending, we bring decades of expertise to every project. You can count on us for exact bends across a wide range of materials, sizes, and applications; each meeting ASME and PFI standards for quality and performance. design. We use precise bending processes backed by decades of innovation, along with certifications that meet the most demanding industry codes.

Our mandrel bending capabilities include:

  • Cold-form bending from 1-inch to 8-inch pipe size with tight radii and minimal distortion
  • Can bend most grades of carbon steel, stainless steel and duplex, chrome, nickel alloys, and aluminum pipe and tubing
  • Prevents deformation, collapse, and kinking of pipes and tubes with thin walls
  • Produces tight-radius bends with no external damage
  • Improves flow characteristics in applications like exhaust systems which require a consistent inner diameter

Frequently asked questions

Mandrel bending is a process in which a solid rod or “mandrel” is placed inside a tube during bending. The rod strengthens the tube, eliminating backpressure and tube collapse, during the bend process. It is often recommended as the safest method of making a bend in a tube or pipe without harming it.

Unlike compression bending where the tube is simply pushed into a die, mandrel bending allows for much tighter radii and finer dimensional tolerances by controlling both the inside and outside of the bend. Compared with empty-die bending, mandrel bending produces cleaner bends without structural deformation, maintaining the tube’s original shape and surface quality.

Tulsa Tube Bending can bend most grades of carbon steel, stainless steel/duplex, chrome, nickel alloys, and aluminum pipe and tubing. As a rule, the ductility of the material and the bend radius specified are the two primary factors that determine if a bend can be made.

The mandrel’s internal support balances the compressive forces on the inner bend radius, minimizing the tube walls from flattening or wrinkling. By filling the interior, the mandrel ensures the outer radius stretches uniformly and the inner wall retains its roundness, yielding smooth, precise bends with virtually no ovality.
Order higher quantities when possible.
Common sizes, wall thicknesses, and grades are more cost-efficient. Many sizes listed in pipe charts are specialty items and cost more due to limited production. Our experienced sales team can help you select widely available options that meet your specs.

Use standard bend radii.
Modern techniques can achieve nearly any radius, but some cost more. Many projects have flexibility in radius selection. Choosing a common radius and adjusting tangent lengths can lower your total cost. Submit a quote and we will help you explore the most efficient radius options.

Consider welded pipe or tube.
Today’s welded material often meets or exceeds quality standards once reserved for seamless. For many applications, switching to welded can reduce costs by 25% to 40%.

Simplify end preparations.
Unless your project requires square or beveled ends, opt for plain or rough cut. This slight change can lead to significant savings. Refer to our end prep guide to choose what fits your needs.

Avoid rush orders when possible.
Standard lead times (typically 3 to 5 days for small jobs) allow us to group similar orders and reduce set-up costs. Planning ahead helps keep your project on time and on budget.

Tulsa Tube Bending makes it easy to specify your bends with the option that works best for you.

Submit your project details through our online quote form, and we will follow up with pricing and lead time.

Have a sketch, drawing, or print? Attach it directly to the form. We accept .bmp, .tif, .gif, .jpg, .pdf, .dwg, or .dwf files. You can also fax it to the number listed at the bottom of the page.

We will need to know the following for every bend:

  • Quantity of bends
  • Outside diameter of pipe/tube or nominal pipe size
  • Wall thickness or pipe schedule
  • Material grade
  • Degree of bend or arc length of bend
  • Radius of bend
  • Required tangent lengths
  • End preparation (plain, square cut, beveled, etc.)

Built to spec. Backed by experience.

Every mandrel bend is tailored to your exact design requirements, with quality controls that support structural, industrial, and commercial standards. Trusted in everything from goalposts to davit arms, our bends meet the demands of real-world applications.

Precision across every radius

From tight turns to broad sweeps, we deliver reliable, repeatable bends with minimal distortion. We maintain cross-sectional integrity even in large-diameter pipes, square tubing, and high-performance alloys.

Decades of trusted performance

Since 1958, we have been the go-to resource for complex pipe bending. Our experienced technical sales force and modern equipment help you move from quote to completion with unmatched efficiency.

I have closer pipe bending sources, but I’ve found that Tulsa Tube Bending offers an overall product and service value that overcomes the distance between us. Quick deliveries, excellent quality, good service and FOB delivered prices make it easy for me to do business with Tulsa Tube Bending.
